LABOUR MP Hugh Bayley met his match at the weekend - when he took on a six-year-old at chess.
Young Pierre Weller proved he was a force to be reckoned with when he challenged York MP at the Rapid-play Chess Championships, in the city.
The youngster, whose mother is French and father English, is a pupil at Scarcroft School, York, and has only been playing the game for a year.
Tourna- ment organiser Peter Cloudsdale, of York Chess Club, said: "Pierre is a very keen and very talented player."
The rapid-play tournament, in which players get only 25 minutes on the clock, attracted 60 seniors and 34 juniors from all over the region. All the profits from the competition are being pumped into schools chess in the city.
The eventual winner in the senior section was Jim Burnett, from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, while the junior title went to Richard Allis, a pupil at Oaklands School, York.
Unfazed by his defeat, Mr Bayley said: "I am pleased to see so much interest in this championship.
"Chess is becoming more popular in the York area, especially among young people."
