Newcastle striker Richard Offiong has returned to St James' Park after Darlington boss Mick Tait decided not to extend his loan period for a third month.
The 19-year-old, who initially joined Quakers for a month in November, had his spell at Feethams extended to a second month after firing four goals in his first five games for the club.
However, after failing to find the net in his next four games, Tait has turned down the option of having Offiong for a third and final month.
"Richard's second month expired on Tuesday and we have decided not to renew it," said Tait. "It's been a good experience for Richard and I'm sure he'll go on to do very well.
"He's a great young lad and it's been nice having him with us. It's all been a bit different for him but I think he's done well.
"He's only young and still has a lot to learn but I can see him doing well for himself."
Offiong's departure could pave the way for a first-team return for Ian Clark. The former Hartlepool man will be looking to force his way back into Tait's plans after the Quakers boss revealed his frustration in the transfer market.
"The problem we have is that teams are reluctant to let their goalscorers go as you'd expect," said Tait. "There are plenty of players out there who I would love to have but getting teams to part with them is very difficult."
Tait's striking options could be boosted soon with the news that Danny Mellanby is close to making a first-team return
A niggling back injury has restricted the 23-year-old to just one start this season. "Danny's feeling a lot better now and he should be back very soon," said Tait.
Glenn Naylor will this week have a scan on his knee injury.
l Darlington's youth team yesterday beat Halifax 1-0.
l Graham Westley has quit as manager and chairman of Farnborough and been named as the new boss at Nationwide Conference rivals Stevenage.
The 34-year-old resigned from Farnborough just three days after their glamour FA Cup fourth-round tie against Arsenal, which the minnows lost 5-1 after the game was switched to Highbury.
