53WORK has started to build a new office for the Sure Start programme in Darlington.
The Government-backed initiative aims to improve the health and well-being of families with young children.
It provides education and play opportunities, health care and advice to parents and pre-school youngsters.
The new building, next to Darlington Railway Museum, will be a purpose-built complex.
Facilities at the centre will include a nursery, information centre and meeting rooms. It is hoped around 15 staff will work at the building.
Car parking spaces will also be included in the building project.
The first sod was cut this week at the site where the centre will be built.
