ABOUT 150 youngsters took time out from their studies to discover more about life in the world of work.

The 11 to 13-year-olds from schools across Hambleton and Richmondshire attended Stem - the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths Fair 2003.

The event, at the Hambleton Forum, Northallerton, was designed to give young people the chance to experience learning situations with adults other than teachers.

Local and national businesses and organisations held a number of hands-on workshops with the aim of bringing their activities to life.

Providing the know-how were representatives from a number of organisations such as Corus, the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Mouchel North Yorkshire, RAF Mountain Rescue Team, North Yorkshire Police and Forestry Enterprise.

The event organiser for North Yorkshire Business and Education Partnership, June Windross, said: "We are bridging the gap between the classroom and the workplace by showing how the learning done at school is used in the world of work."
