YORK'S bid to become the region's railway centre is proceeding well.

The city's National Railway Museum (NRM) has teamed up with York College to devise a £1m plan which it hopes will ensure the city becomes home to an academy, where railway trainees would learn their skills.

The City of York Council is also behind the project and will join attempts to persuade the regional development agency Yorkshire Forward to invest in the idea.

York College assistant principal, Pat Savage, said: "The NRM is a prestigious location.

"We are working with the railway industry to make this happen. We will be combining the training of rail companies with the training of York College, working with them to design courses and find solutions.

"It is very exciting time. This would be the first venue in the country - a major academy for rail at a time when the industry is trying to attract new staff."

NRM director Andrew Scott said the academy would help to reinforce York's position as a city of rail excellence.
