A VILLAGE appeal to create a footpath by a busy road is nearly halfway to its target.
Residents in Marton, near Kirkbymoorside, plan to create the path by the road leading to the village hall.
Their fund stands at more than £3,500 after being boosted by a string of events.
Residents were so concerned about safety when walking the quarter-mile to the hall on the outskirts of the village that they asked North Yorkshire County Council to build a footpath.
But because of a cash shortage, the scheme, estimated to cost about £7,500, could not be given priority, so the community set about raising most of the money itself. The project was adopted by residents to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee. It is hoped work will start later this year.
