YOUNG musicians will play in Gateshead Council's civic chamber on Friday.
Gateshead Youth Orchestra was invited to perform after winning the top award in the 2002 Local Educational Authority (LEA) Music Awards last month.
Jazz singer Cleo Laine, who is also president of the National Music Council, presented the award to the council at a ceremony at the Royal Society for the Arts.
The Mayor of Gateshead, Councillor John Hamilton, will present the award to the orchestra in front of full council.
The trophy was awarded to the council in recognition of it advice to and support for other LEA music services and for its commitment to music education over many years.
According to the National Music Council, an important feature of the council's Music Service last year was the publication of Music in the Foundation Stage, sales of which have funded the purchase of instruments and the Youth Orchestra's annual tours.
