STAFF and pupils at Abbey Junior School are celebrating after having achieved a first for Darlington.
Following an inspection, the school has been awarded a Quality Mark by the Basic Skills Agency. Inspectors examined teaching and learning, focusing on reading, writing, spelling and number work. Agency director Alan Wells presented the award, which is given for three years and will be renewed if the school again attains the high standards required.
Headteacher George Ford said: "It is recognition for the efforts of the staff as much as anything. The children produced exceptionally good work but they have got to be in a sound working environment to start with.
