A SOLDIER from the North-East has finished runner-up in the Army's judo championships.

Signaller Natalie Waller, of 16 Signal Regiment, The Royal Corps of Signals, was one of 60 competitors taking part in the event at the Army School of Physical Training in Aldershot.

Competitors were asked to put their skills and stamina to the test in a series of team and individual competitions.

Natalie, 20, who has been doing judo since she was 11, was a runner-up in the over- 69kg and women's open event.

She said: "I like the adrenaline rush when I'm fighting, and I enjoy competing. I took part in a lot of judo competitions all over the country before I joined the Army.

"I hope to go on to get into the Army team eventually. I train for three to four hours, once a week at the moment."

The former Hummersknott Comprehensive School pupil joined the Army in 1998 and is serving in Germany as an installation technician.

Her parents, Robert and Susan Waller, live in Darlington.
