WHEN Darlington student Hannah Gorton travelled to France for a week's work experience she expected to practise her language skills on other humans.

Instead, the 16-year-old from Newton Aycliffe, who attends Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, spent her time at a dog-grooming parlour in Rouen.

Hannah was one of 33 A-level French students from the college who travelled to Rouen last week.

Louise Todd, the college's head of modern languages, said: "Most of the work placements were in the usual cafes, restaurants, bars, schools and crches, but three students, including Hannah, were fortunate to be placed in more unusual workplaces."

Zo Adamson, 17, spent the week with a High Court solicitor and Dean Murphy, also 17, helped with administration at the International Business School.

Ms Todd said: "More than half of our first year A-level students were brave enough to go to Rouen and it has been an excellent experience for them. Their language skills have improved tremendously and their confidence has grown."
