BUSINESSES and other premises in Sunderland could soon benefit from better security thanks to a grants initiative.

The project is aimed at reducing the threat of crime and vandalism to premises in the Grindon, Thorney Close, Farringdon and Plains Farm areas of the city.

It has been designed to help increase business confidence in the area, safeguard jobs and create further employment opportunities.

The sixth round of the Single Regeneration Budget will provide almost £120,000 towards the Commercial and Community Security grants fund.

Project co-ordinator Stephen Eagling said: "Firms and organisations need to feel confident that their enterprise is safe and that goods, services and facilities are sufficiently protected.

"It is, therefore, important to make sure that effective security measures are implemented with the minimum of delay or fuss."

Grants of up to £10,000 will be available. The money will be used to provide everything from security roller shutters to closed-circuit television cameras, intruder alarm systmes and a range of low-cost security measures such as lever deadlocks and anti-ram bollards.

Surveys and advice on security measures will be provided to applicants by Sunderland City Council's Security Services team.

Security measures installed in specific premises will also be closely monitored.
