THE borough of Scarborough is about to get its fourth successive woman mayor.

Two female council members, Councillors Freda Coultas (Conservative) and Eileen Vickers (Labour), have been nominated for the office. Coun Coultas is the deputy mayor, and Coun Vickers is a former deputy mayor.

ANNUAL MEETING: The ninth annual meeting of Sowerby Flower Club was held at the parochial hall when chairman Barbara Thornton welcomed 80 members and several guests. The meeting began with silence for founder member Rita Till, who died in December. Treasurer Jean Woodhouse's report showed a healthy balance. The chairman was stepping down after five years, but would continue as vice-chairman for the coming year to support new chairman Pam Holland.

CHURCH REPAIRS: A book on the history of the Doomsday Book village of Sherburn, near Scarborough, was launched at the weekend to help raise £14,000 needed to carry out work on its ancient parish church. Residents have been told that the money needs to be spent on electrical work. Anne Collier, the author of the book, said: "The cost of keeping the church open amounted to £15,420 last year. "The news of the electrical work has come as a big blow."

HOLIDAY EVENTS: Scarborough's Museums and Gallery have confirmed details of events planned for the half-term holiday. Tomorrow, visitors can make cards for a game of snap at the Rotunda Museum. A quiz is planned at the Wood End Museum on Wednesday, and a workshop at the Art Gallery on Thursday will demonstrate how to make mobiles to catch and reflect light. PRESIDENT DIES: The president of Scarborough Lions Club, Alexander Hay, has died suddenly. A market researcher, Mr Hay was a leading member of the Lions for 20 years and had been involved with the organisation at local, national and international level.
