THEY may have been famous for building roads, but now Roman soldiers have been recruited to promote travelling to York by rail.

A cardboard army mustered for the first time at the city's railway station during the weekend for inspection by commanding officer, Maximus Gluteus - better known as Keith Mulhearn, of Roamin' Tours.

Each legionnaire will take up a post around the city to help highlight a travel promotion and will remain on duty until April 30.

First Stop York By Train entitles visitors who arrive in the city by rail to discounts at some of the local attractions.

"History is on our side in promoting York and, over the years, the annual campaign has attracted many thousands of visitors,'' said Arriva Trains Northern spokesman Dyan Crowther. "This time, we are going a step further for the half-term and Easter holidays to attract even more people to the city by rail. It all goes to boost the local economy by bringing in visitors without an invasion of cars."
