A SCHOOL is on the last lap to raising the £50,000 it needs to win performing arts college status.
Belmont Comprehensive School, in Durham, held fundraising events, including a balloon race and a soaking for the headteacher, to raise the money it needs to hit its target.
On the last day before half-term, pupils took part in a range of activities that headteacher Pat Howarth is hoping will raise between £2,000 and £3,000.
About 750 balloons were released in the race, organised by the Parent Teacher Association.
The school, which has been fundraising for two years, must submit its bid to the Government next month.
Mr Howarth said if the bid was successful, £100,000 of funding would help to set up drama, dance and recording studios, with facilities open for use by the community.
He praised pupils for their support of the fundraising. "They have been brilliant and have worked very hard," he said.
