A MAN has turned his 21-year dream into reality by starting his own driving school.
Stephen Whittaker, 39, has wanted to become a driving instructor since passing his test 21 years ago.
He decided to pursue his ambition when back problems meant he could no longer continue in his previous line of work.
After qualifying as an advanced driving instructor, Easington Action Team for Jobs arranged for him to meet Biz Fizz coach Elliott Patterson, who gave him confidence, encouragement and support to set up Whit's Driving Tuition.
Mr Whittaker said: "After passing my training in October 2002, my girlfriend suggested I visit Easington Action Team for Jobs, as they had helped her to find work earlier in the year.
"The Action Team offered me support, but also recommended that I meet Elliott, who helps people living or working in Horden or Easington Colliery with their businesses.
"Initially, I was concerned about the work involved in becoming self-employed, but Elliott has been there to provide one-to-one advice and support every step of the way."
