PUB landlords are being put on the alert for a bogus barman who talks his way into jobs and then disappears with the takings.

The man, calling himself Simon Lee, turned up at a pub near Leyburn where he was hired as a barman.

Two days later he disappeared together with several hundred pounds of the pub's takings.

Police in the Wensleydale community believe it is not the first time the man has struck.

PC Paul Calvert said: "We believe this man has been stealing from pubs in this manner for several months and I want to warn landlords very strongly to be on guard.

"This man has discovered a successful method and he could strike anywhere across the country unless he is stopped."

The man is in his late 20s, about 5ft 6in, medium build. He has short curly ginger hair, a Wiltshire accent and one of his upper teeth is black and decayed.

He does not appear to drink or smoke, dresses smartly and has spoken of having a wife and child.

When he turned up at the pub near Leyburn he was driving a white Peugeot 405, possibly H-registered, but police think he may change vehicles.

PC Calvert said: "He is not a great barman, but he is certainly a good enough talker to persuade people to give him a job. He is very plausible."

Pub landlords are being warned to be on their guard against the bogus barman as are owners of hotels and guesthouses which he may visit looking for somewhere to stay.

Anyone approached by such a man, looking for a job or accommodation, should telephone Richmond CID on (01609) 783131.
