A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a soldier was killed in a car crash.
Lee Maxwell, a 23-year-old based at Catterick Garrison, was killed on Saturday morning in a single vehicle accident on the base.
He was one of five people in a Rover 200 which crashed into a tree on Plumer Road just before 10.15am.
Kingsman Maxwell came from Liverpool and was serving with the 1st Battalion The King's Regiment.
Paramedics tried to revive him at the scene but he was declared dead on arrival at the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton.
Three other people were also taken to the Friarage for treatment after they were removed from the wreckage of the car.
A 20-year-old man was treated for face and leg injuries, a 17-year-old girl had a hand injury and bruising and a 27-year-old woman needed treatment for back injuries and a broken jaw.
The male driver of the car has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
He was later released on police bail until Wednesday next week.
North Yorkshire Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the accident to call (01423) 539474.
