POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a road accident yesterday.
A 20-year-old Spennymoor man was driving along Long Lane, Binchester, towards the A688 at about 6.30am when his silver Renault Clio car careered off the road into a nearby field and overturned. PC Jamie Rielly, of Spennymoor police, said the driver was lucky to escape injury as his car suffered major damage. Police would like to speak to witnesses to the accident, and in particular the driver of a red Vauxhall Nova said to be travelling towards Willington at the time. PANCAKE SUPPER: Villagers will be singing in praise of the pancake at a Shrove Tuesday supper tonight. Pancakes in all shapes and sizes will be on the menu at the Barrington Hall, St John's Chapel, in Weardale, and parishioners will be encouraged to join in a programme of hymns. The event starts at 7.30pm.
EMBROIDERY HONOUR: Audrey Bell, of Darlington Embroiderers' Guild, won the group's Festival Bowl Award with a sewing bag using Ruskin Lace work. The group will be in the Cornmill Centre, Darlington, from March 23 to 29, as part of National Stitching Week.
Prayer Day: St Cuthbert's Church, Crook, is holding a women's world day of prayer, on Friday, at 1.30pm. The speaker will be Sister Alice.
SALVATION SINGERS: Crook Salvation Army will present a concert from the Consett Singers on Saturday, at 7pm. The donation ticket is £2, payable at the door.
YOUTH MEETING: A second youth meeting takes place at the Hargill Haven Common Room, Howden-le-Wear tomorrow, at 4.30pm. The development of the five-a-side pitch will be discussed.
PEACE VIGIL: Sedgefield Against War group, which held a silent vigil for peace in Ferryhill Market Place at the weekend, will be back on Sedgefield village green on Saturday from 11am to noon for its sixth vigil.
COOKER FIRE: Firefighters were called to put out a kitchen blaze which started on an electric cooker in Newlands Road, Trimdon Village, at about 9.20am yesterday.
CABINET MEETING: Sedgefield Borough Council's cabinet will meet in the council offices, Green Lane, Spennymoor, on Thursday at 10am.
