SOLDIERS were mourning the loss of a comrade yesterday.
The 1st Battalion of The Kings Regiment, at Gatterick Garrison, North Yorkshire, were shocked by the news of the death of Lee Maxwell, 23, in a road accident on Saturday.
He was a passenger in a car which left nearby Plumer Road and hit a tree. The driver was later arrested and bailed on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Soldiers of the 1st Battalion of the Kings Own Scottish Borderers - also based at the garrison - are themselves coming to terms with the death of Lance Corporal Stuart Sterling, 25.
Awarded his stripe a week ago, he was at home on leave in Kirkmuirhill when his car was also involved in an accident.
"His friends - and he had a considerable circle of friends, both militarily and socially - are devastated by the tragedy," said his commanding officer, Major Chris Frazer.
"He was a quality guy who had a wicked sense of humour. I'm afraid we are still finding it very difficult to take in."
