PARALYMPIC gold medallist Tanni Grey-Thompson will be competing in the 21st Somerfield Redcar Half Marathon this Sunday.
Tanni, 33, who lives in Redcar with husband Ian and one-year-old daughter Carys, will use the race as preparation for the London Marathon next month.
"It is good to be able to practice so close to home," she said.
"Redcar is the first race of the season and the profile is growing each year. It is a fantastic race with a wonderful atmosphere."
The British athlete, originally from Cardiff, also gave organisers at Redcar and Cleveland a pat on the back.
She added: "I'd like to praise the council for its organisation and enthusiasm for this event."
The wheelchair race will start outside Redcar Leisure Centre on Majuba Road at 10.20am, just ahead of the main race, which will be started by the Mayor, Councillor Eric Jackson, and sponsors Somerfield's divisional executive, Bryan Pike, at 10.30am.
The race, which incorporates the North-East Championships, will accept entries on the day.
Everyone who finishes will get a free T-shirt, medal and goody bag. For more information log on to www.redcar-cleveland.gov.uk
