EVERYTHING from beer tasting to knocking in nails using frozen fruit will be explored at the University of Sunderland as part of National Science Week.
The events, which began yesterday, are aimed at showing that science and technology can be fun and relevant to everyday life.
The university's Dr John Kilcoyne began the week of entertainment with a light-hearted lecture about chemistry.
His unusual approach included knocking in nails with frozen bananas and creating explosions.
For older participants there will be a community lecture on the history of brewing, which also offers the chance to taste test real ale and to pull a pint.
Youngsters can look forward to a roadshow, which will include a range of science-related fun.
The Bright Sparks club was launched by the university to show youngsters aged between 11 and 16 that science and technology are fun, exciting and relevant.
