COD has been taken off a staff canteen menu in an eco-friendly move.
Durham County Council said that because North Sea cod stocks had dwindled and the fish was more expensive to buy, it had been replaced with the more common pollock to keep down the cost of meals and protect fish stocks.
It is the latest move by the council to introduce sustainable and environmentally-sensitive products.
Fair Trade tea and coffee are available to anyone booking refreshments for meetings and seminars, and Fair Trade coffee is served in the County Hall restaurant.
The council's in-house caterer, Service Direct, is also looking to stock Fair Trade confectionery. It also recycles the cooking oil it uses.
