LEISURE centre prices in Sedgefield borough are to rise by an average of three per cent.
But the new pricing structure includes a concessionary scheme for the unemployed and those claiming benefits, and an increase in swimming session times from 45 minutes to an hour.
A recent report to Sedgefield Borough Council's cabinet said: "Research shows that compared with the population of the borough, the proportion of people unemployed or claiming benefit and using the leisure centres is significantly low.
"They represent less than four per cent of total leisure centre customers. This implies that a pricing structure needs to be considered which is specifically targeted to redress this imbalance.
"Consultation has identified that cost is a barrier to leisure participation. Recent community appraisals highlight the need for greater access to leisure opportunities and consequently the cost barrier to participation needs to be addressed."
Analysis also identified that pool prices at Spennymoor Leisure Centre were lower than similar facilities in the region, but that Newton Aycliffe pool prices were broadly in line with others.
Officers also noticed fluctuating levels of demand at the Aycliffe pool, so have proposed a higher rate during the April to September period.
The report, which was approved by cabinet members, said the three per cent general increase would net an additional £21,000 for the council's leisure budget.
A further report will be produced after six months to evaluate the new pricing structure, which should highlight any changes that might be needed.
