A SHOPPING centre proved that every penny counts when it presented the proceeds of a pond collection to charity.
Pennies thrown into the Christmas grotto pond at Durham's Prince Bishop's Shopping Centre were counted adding up to £450.
The sum was donated to Councillor Eileen Rochford, the Mayor of Durham, who will share it between her chosen charities - the Butterwick Children's Hospice and the Round Table Children's Wish.
Coun Rochford said: "Both of these charities are very dear to my heart."
Richard Toynbee, centre manager at Prince Bishops, said: "We are delighted to be able to help the mayor to raise funds for two such deserving charities."
