YOUNGSTERS learned the ropes of working backstage at a theatre as part of an educational visit.
Year six children from St Mary's RC Primary School, in Wingate, visited the Gala Theatre, in Durham, through a learning programme organised by Peterlee Education Action Zone (EAZ).
The scheme is aimed at raising standards of achievement, improving children's motivation and enhancing delivery of the national curriculum.
At the theatre, the children were given a guided tour and shown how the lighting and sound systems operate, as well as looking at how the theatre markets itself.
They were given tasks based on their schoolwork, and used a digital camera to record the visit.
Lisa Thorner, the theatre's community education officer, was on hand to offer help and guidance.
EAZ consultant Steve Lamb, who developed the link with the theatre, said: "Even at this stage, schools are preparing young people for the world of work, so to see it at first-hand was a great experience for these children."
