YOUNG people had a chance to tune an engine and design a robot during a careers fair in County Durham.
Opportunities 2003, at the Ramside Hall Hotel in Carrville, Durham, was aimed at pupils from years ten and 11.
The idea behind it was to help them decide between sixth-form education, going to college or work-based training when they reach 16.
Pauline Butler, of Connexions, County Durham, said: "Young people have so much choice available to them after year 11 now, it is essential that they are given every chance to make the best decision for their future.
"The idea behind Opportunities 2003 is that the young people can meet representatives of the county's training providers, schools and colleges all under one roof, and have a go at some of the career options they are offering."
More than 30 occupations which can be chosen as modern apprenticeships, along with college courses and A-level choices, were represented at the two-day event earlier this week.
The event, organised by the county's Learning and Skills Council, also offered careers advice.
