A SCIENCE lesson proved to be plain sailing for some - but not for every attentive youngster.
Children following the fortunes of circumnavigator Captain James Cook embarked on a scientific workshop, building model boats and sails; then putting the finished products to the test on the duck pond at the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum, Stewart Park, Middlesbrough.
The workshop was organised as part of National Science Week, which aims to encourage people to look at science through interesting activities and experiments.
Learning and access officer Claire Pounder said: "An understanding of science and technology was essential to enable Captain Cook to become a successful navigator, sailor and explorer.
"Many people find the idea of science and technology quite daunting. Our activities provide fun ways of discovering how important science is to our everyday lives.''
