COMMUNITY members will contribute to making the world's largest dress as part of a campaign.
People from throughout Durham will join the student group Speak in its world record bid at St Nicholas's Church, Durham, tomorrow. Speak is a national network which campaigns against injustice. The big dress is being made as a petition against the sweatshop industry. It is being constructed all over the UK, and will be presented to ministers from the Department of Trade and Industry. The event will include drama and other live performances outside the church.
SITE SAVING: Durham Wildlife Trust has been awarded a £5,000 grant from the Barclays Site Savers scheme for management work at Windy Nook Nature Park, Gateshead. For details about what is on offer at the park, call 0191-584 3112.
FEWER SPACES: About 140 spaces on the top floor of the multi-storey car park off Percy Street, Newcastle, will be unavailable for 16 weeks to allow resurfacing work to be carried out.
FIRE MEETING: The meeting of the Tyne and Wear Fire and Civil Defence Authority's finance and best value committee, due to be held in Sunderland Civic Centre on Monday, has been cancelled due to lack of business.
HEAD SHAVED: A headteacher is shedding his hair to raise cash for Comic Relief today. Barrie Russell, headteacher at Wellbeck Primary School, Newcastle, will go under the clippers during a school assembly, for a sponsored head shave.
WARD SURGERY: Easington district councillors for Dawdon will hold a surgery in Dawdon Miners Welfare Centre, Mount Stewart Street, on Monday, between 6pm and 7pm.
IRISH NIGHT: Croxdale Folk Club is holding an Irish night on Tuesday, the day after St Patrick's Day, at the Daleside Arms, Croxdale, from 8pm. It will feature The Old Age Travellers and an Irish supper. Tickets cost £2.50.
SPIDER MAN: Michael Mann will be showing youngsters creepy crawlies including spiders, tarantulas and stick insects at Brandon Library tomorrow, between 10.30am and 11.30am. The event is free.
MUSIC NIGHTS: A buskers night will be held in the Stables Bar at the Beamish Mary Inn, No Place, near Stanley, tonight. Tomorrow the band Prognosis will be playing. Both nights start at 8.30pm and there is a cover charge. For details call 0191-370 0237.
ADVICE SESSIONS: Durham Citizens Advice Bureau will hold outreach advice sessions on Monday, at Arden House, West Rainton, between 10am and 11am and at Kelloe Community Association from 11.30am to 12.30pm. No appointment is necessary.
