A CASH-strapped playgroup faced with closure has been saved, thanks to a £2,750 grant.
Tanfield Lea Playgroup and Toddlers, based in the Old Junior School, Tanfield Lea, near Stanley, was facing a cash crisis and looked likely to shut down.
The Lloyds TSB Foundation stepped in at the last minute with a grant for £2,750 towards the group's running costs.
Jean Cranna, playgroup leader, said: "We are flying on the news.
"Without these donations, we would have had to close. The nearest nursery would be at least two bus journeys away and the journey would be impossible for most families."
The centre provides early years education and play facilities for more than 20 pre-school children and has 36 tots on the books for its mother and toddler group.
The youngsters created their own certificate of thanks for the grant, which they presented on Friday to Linda Bewley, manager of the Lloyds TSB in nearby Annfield Plain.
Mrs Bewley said: "I am delighted that the Lloyds TSB Foundation has been able to support Tanfield Lea Playgroup with its funding requirements.
"The charity gives local children a great start to their education and I hope his donation sees it go from strength to strength."
