A ROW over controversial proposals, which chemists fear could force them out of business, intensified yesterday.
A report from the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has suggested a relaxation of the rules on opening pharmacies.
If approved, it would lead to the Government lifting restrictions on how many chemists can dispense prescriptions in a particular area.
Independent pharmacists in Darlington have condemned the move, saying big supermarket chains would swiftly move into profitable areas and put them out of business.
Three local traders are hoping to meet Health Secretary and town MP Alan Milburn later this month to express their concerns.
But the Asda store in Whinbush Way, Darlington, has launched its own petition, asking customers to support plans to bring a pharmacy to the supermarket.
The company also plans to present its petition to Mr Milburn, and argues that millions of pounds could be cut from shopping bills for medicines in the UK.
Darlington store manager Seane Wilkinson said: "When-ever we ask customers what additional services we should provide, pharmacy comes out top by miles."
However, the National Pharmaceutical Association is opposing the plans and Mr Milburn has indicated that he will reject them if there is enough hostility.
