DISABLED people can get around more easily thanks to a scheme to improve access and safety.
Sunderland City Council's three-year maintenance programme has already made 94 per cent of signal-controlled crossings more user friendly.
By next year, when the three-year cycle is complete, the figure will be 100 per cent.
The programme ties in with 2003 being European Year of Disabled People. It has already involved almost £200,000 being spent on measures including increasing the number of dropped kerbs.
