RESIDENTS are to be given their chance to have a say on plans for a facelift of a Teesside community.

People in North Ormesby, Middlesbrough, are to be asked what they want in the area, the services they require and how they want them delivered.

The £20m scheme includes proposals for combining the doctor's surgery with other health services, new housing, a revamped market square and a new social centre. There will also be access improvements to the A66.

Middlesbrough Council has appointed the Tees Valley Housing Group to oversee the project. The housing association will work alongside North Ormesby Neighbourhood Action Initiative, a group made up of community representatives.

A Middlesbrough Council spokesman said last night: "We look forward to working with the Tees Valley Housing Group, other partners and the local community in making progress with this ambitious and imaginative scheme.''

Deborah Stephenson, the assistant director of community investment at the housing group said: "Tees Valley Housing Group is delighted to have been selected by Middlesbrough Council to lead the redevelopment of North Ormesby, and we are looking forward to working with the residents and community there to bring about the changes they want.''

An empty shop in North Ormesby is being turned into a centre to be used by a recently appointed neighborhood manager and support worker during the two-year scheme.

The funding is coming from the Single Regeneration Budget Partnership and Middlesbrough's Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.
