Hartlepool United has teamed up with Hartlepool Borough Council in an attempt to improve literacy, numeracy and computer skills amongst pupils in the town.
The two organisations are involved in a pilot project at the town's City Learning Centre involving year six pupils from Brougham Primary School.
However, a bid has been submitted to the Government for Playing For Success status which, if successful, would result in a classroom being created at Victoria Park - home of the football club.
Dawn Gilderoy, the council's Out of School Learning co-ordinator, said: "The whole idea is to use football as a theme to raise attainment levels in literacy, numeracy and information and computer technology.
"For example, pupils could be asked to work out how much it would cost to go to a game, including things such as tickets, programme, refreshments and transport.
"Football is popular amongst the majority of youngsters and linking up with the local football club in this way is helping them to take an interest in these important education subjects.
"Hartlepool United has been very supportive of this scheme which demonstrates their commitment to the local community. Players have been attending the sessions, and will present certificates to pupils at the end of the pilot scheme in April."
