THE regional development agency One NorthEast last night announced a successor to outgoing chief executive Mike Collier.
Alan Clarke, chief executive of Northumberland County Council, will replace Mr Collier at the head of the agency charged with furthering the region's prospects in May.
The announcement was met with mixed response last night amid fears that it may strengthen perceptions that One NorthEast is primarily focused on Tyneside.
One businessman said: "There has been a feeling ever since the regional development agency was founded that it cannot see beyond Newcastle.
"It would appear that it can. It is a shame its vision only stretches further north than Newcastle."
Greater importance has been placed on the forthcoming appointment of a chairman to replace Dr John Bridge when he steps down in December.
A source said: "If both the top positions within One NorthEast come from Newcastle and above, there is little hope for County Durham and the Tees Valley."
Mr Clarke, 49, previously worked for South Tyneside Council, Newcastle City Council and Sunderland Borough Council.
