Peace campaigners are stepping up their action in North Yorkshire.

Council staff in York are being urged to walk out of work on the day that war breaks out, while students in the city are also planning action.

The walk-out, which is not an official trade union action, is expected to take place at 11am and could last for up to half-an-hour.

Local Unison convenor Peter Household is calling on colleagues and others from the city to join him outside the city's Mansion House.

On Saturday, a delegation of between 20 and 50 members of the Leeds Muslim Forum will travel to the Shrine of Justice and Peace in Ripon Cathedral to offer prayers for peace, alongside local church leaders.

In an unprecedented move, the delegation will lay down prayer mats at 1pm in the south aisle of the medieval cathedral and make their midday prayers before joining Christians at the adjacent shrine where prayers will be offered for peace.
