Eston Labour Club has adopted Zoe's Place baby hospice at Normanby as its adopted charity this year, but it needs prizes of any kind for tombola, raffle and auction.

Zoe's Place, based in a converted convent, hopes to raise £11,000 for a bereavement unit.

MAJOR IMPROVEMENT: A £150,000 package of improvements will soon be transforming Regent Square, Beaconsfield Square and Gibb Square, at Hartlepool's Headland. Work is expected to start next month on measures ranging from new railings, walls and footpaths to improved lighting, under a resident-led project.

YOUNGSTERS' GARDEN: A vacant strip of land is set to blossom into a garden for youngsters at St John Vianney Primary School, Hartlepool. Planters, seating, coloured paving, a raised stage/play area and a tree-lined walkway are transforming the patch of land between the school building and the new Early Years Centre.

GUILD APOLOGY: Redcar Ladies' Lifeboat Guild has apologised to its supporters who arrived for a coffee morning earlier this month, which had been postponed. A spokesman said the event had to be cancelled due to circumstances beyond the guild's control. The group will hold another coffee morning on Saturday, from 10am to noon at the Zetland Rooms, St Peter's Church, Lord Street, Redcar.

MORE ROOMS: Hartlepool Borough Council has received a planning application from Whitbread for permission to build a two-storey extension at the Travel Inn on the town's Marina, which would provide 20 extra bedrooms.

GRASS REPLACED: Following a resident's complaint in Newsam Road, Eaglescliffe, Stockton Borough Council is considering replacing the grass verges with block paving. In some places the grass has turned to mud and the footway is too narrow.
