A POPULAR children's author held a story corner yesterday to promote a project to help children in Middlesbrough learn to read.
Steve Weatherill, who writes the Baby Goz books, met youngsters from Archibald, Whinney Banks and Newport primary schools with their parents for the launch of the Book Bag scheme.
Every week children borrow a different bag, which contains a book, a game and an activity.
The idea is to encourage families to learn together and improve their skills at home.
"This is an excellent way of getting parents more involved with their children's learning," said Joan Ford, chairwoman of West Middlesbrough Neighbourhood Trust.
"It is important that children and parents do these activities together to help our young people develop vital skills at the earliest possible age."
Youngsters will work with two trained auxiliaries to develop their speaking and listening skills.
The scheme forms part of the West Middlesbrough Oracy Project
