FLY-TIPPERS in Darlington were dealt a severe warning by council officials yesterday.
Darlington Borough Council revealed that on Tuesday more fixed penalty notices were issued in one day than in the whole of last year.
All the notices, each carrying a £50 fine, were issued by the council's latest recruit in the campaign against litter, uniformed warden Karl Hesletine.
Mr Hesletine joined the council just two weeks ago and was taking part in a litter awareness day out on patrol with the litter response team when he gained evidence to issue the 22 fines.
The litter squad were working in and around Thompson Street West, Station Road, High Northgate, China Street, Ruby Street, Parkgate, Peabody and Aldbrough Walk areas of Darlington.
The council's anti-litter campaign, backed by The Northern Echo, was launched last year.
The team of uniformed wardens play a key role in ensuring Darlington is kept litter- free. Residents can report incidences of fly-tipping and litter hotspots by calling the council on (01325) 388777.
