A NORTH-EAST engineer is proving the Modern Apprenticeship scheme can be a success.
Paul Warren, 20, has been highlighted by the Government as an outstanding example of how its work-based training programme is helping to plug skills shortages in key sectors.
Mr Warren, from Townend Farm, Sunderland, has worked his way up to team leader at Rolls-Royce's civil engineering operation, on the Pallion Industrial Estate, in the city.
He joined the company as an apprentice, gaining his foundation NVQ level 2 in engineering.
He now leads a team of ten workers, manufacturing components for airliner jet engines.
He said: "It has given me a solid grounding in many different skills required for the equipment we need to use."
