THIRSK butcher Sarah Jane Ballard has cut out a trio of firsts.
In April 2000 when she took over Johnson's butchers in the Market Place following the retirement of her father, Ray, she not only became the first woman butcher in the town but was the first woman to be admitted to the 800-year old Guild of Butchers.
Now she has been appointed vice-chairman of Northallerton and District Butchers' Association, the local branch of the national organisation. She will automatically become chairman next year.
She said:"This is quite an honour and I'm pleased to represent local butchers' interests."
