The Town Clerk was instructed to give notice that on the 1st of July next, the council will substitute gas lamps for the electric lights.

FROM this newspaper 50 years ago. - Experiment in Housing. Stockton Housing Committee propose to acquire a certain number of sub-standard houses and use them as half-way houses for problem families. There under supervision, they will be encouraged to maintain clean and sanitary conditions and be receptive of some of the main principles of good citizenship. In this way they will be brought up to the standard a local authority has the right to expect of people who are to be re-housed.

FROM this newspaper 25 years ago. - Pupils demonstrate against teachers' sanctions. The National Union of Teachers are refusing to supervise children during their lunch break which mean many children, especially in remote areas, have to travel a long way home for lunch. Police were called in to break up protesting pupils in a playground sit-in at Rosecroft School, who were angry they were not allowed indoors because of lack of supervision. There were further mass demonstrations at four other Cleveland schools where 600 pupils went on "strike".
