THE first of a series of special workshops about the new entry level agri-environment pilot scheme centred on Barnard Castle attracted more than 30 farmers last week.
The scheme, launched on March 4, aims to encourage farmers to introduce or continue simple but effective environmental management.
The first workshop for farmers interested in joining was held at Romaldkirk Parish Hall, with another due to be held at Bowes Parish Hall last night. Two more take place next week on Tuesday, again at Bowes Parish Hall, and on Thursday at Romaldkirk Parish Hall. Both run from 7pm-9pm.
The workshops explain the scheme options, requirements, payment rates and rules; outline the steps to make a successful application and offer a chance for farmers to ask questions and obtain guidance on their applications.
Cara Courage, pilot scheme co-ordinator, said: "We're delighted with the response we've had so far from farmers. It's great to have one of the entry-level agri-environmental scheme pilots in this region.
"This is a real opportunity for Teesdale farmers to be involved in the development of this new scheme and we're keen to encourage more to join the workshops to find out more about the scheme and to apply."
Farmers are rewarded for maintaining environmental features such as dry stone walls, hedgerows and rushy pastures. They will be able to choose which options to undertake to suit the features and working practices on their farms.
"We are hoping for a good uptake which in turn will help to protect Teesdale's lovely landscape and to provide habitat for upland birds such as lapwing," she said.
In addition to the workshops, the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group is organising a farm walk at Low Park Wall Farm, on Tuesday, May 6 at 6pm to discuss the scheme options. FWAG is also host at an all day informal drop-in workshop for applicants on Wednesday, May 7, at its offices in Woodleigh, Flatts Road, Barnard Castle (above the tourism offices).
