A MASSIVE operation to clean the streets of Sunderland is under way.
Northumbria Police and Sunderland City Council have joined forces to target graffiti hot spots in the city.
The clean-up is part of ongoing work to combat criminal activity and anti-social behaviour.
Until the end of March, beat bobbies spotting graffiti will call in staff from the city council's environmental services to remove it. Chief Inspector Steve Hopkirk, of Sunderland West Area Command, said: "Crime has actually fallen significantly in the city, but if there is a poor environment, people may not actually realise this."
The council has urged people to play their part by reporting any graffiti they see. Contact the council on 0191-553 4500.
