FIVE men have been arrested in connection with violent disorder at a York City football match last year.
Working with the Cumbria Constabulary, officers from North Yorkshire made the arrests at addresses in Carlisle yesterday morning.
The operation followed alleged incidents of violent disorder, damage and assaults at the football match between York City and Carlisle United on November 30 last year.
The game at Bootham Crescent, York, had been designated a non-police match, but officers had to be called at half-time to restore order.
Officers have since been working closely with both clubs to examine security camera footage.
York police commander Chief Superintendent John Lacy, said: "We will pursue all those who come to this city to take part in acts of hooliganism - where ever they live. Neither the club nor the people of York deserve visitors who bring aggression and destruction with them.
"As well as putting such people before the courts, North Yorkshire Police will be seeking football banning orders. We want to play our part in stopping troublemakers visiting grounds anywhere in the country - including those who follow the national team."
Five men have now been charged with violent disorder and bailed to appear at York magistrates next Wednesday.
