CRAFTSMAN Charles Jones is keeping a steady hand to carve a name in history - but not his own.
The stonemason made the latest addition to the marble tablet listing all bishops, priors and deans of Durham Cathedral, dating back to the late 10th Century.
Mr Jones, 23, used traditional tools of a chisel and dummy to add the name of Michael Sadgrove to the roll of deans, in the cathedral's south choir aisle.
Dean Sadgrove became the 38th person to hold the office at an installation service at the cathedral on Thursday.
It is the first senior cathedral appointment in recent years and the mason who previously carved names on the tablet has long since left the dean and chapter workforce.
Mr Jones, who served his apprenticeship with Historic Scotland, Scotland's version of English Heritage, stepped forward when cathedral clerk of works Bob Matthews sought a volunteer to carve Dean Sadgrove's name.
"I've done similar jobs before and I suppose I was the one brave enough to tackle it," he said.
"I took a tracing of the letters from the other names to make sure I got the same style and then it's just a case of chiselling them out.
"I've taken some stick from the other lads. They keep winding me up saying I've spelt the name wrong, but I don't mind.
"It's nice to think that if I visit here in years to come, I can say: 'I did that'."
Mr Jones will be volunteering for the next addition to the tablet, when the new bishop, Canon Tom Wright, is enthroned later this year.
