THE first phase of a £1.5m information system to help motorists beat congestion has been unveiled.
The first elements of City of York Council's Traffic Congestion Management System (TCMS) was switched on last week.
Councillor Tracey Simpson-Laing, council executive member for transport, unveiled one of the car park message signs in the Lord Mayor's Walk.
The launch follows the introduction of an information system to give more information to passengers waiting at York bus stops.
The first part of TCMS - the first system of its kind in Europe - provides information on car park capacity.
A network of 24 message signs at key locations on the inner ring road will give motorists early warning if a car park is full and where alternative parking is available.
All the message signs should be installed by May.
They will eventually be linked to a central computer which will provide a range of information to motorists, including traffic flow and roadworks
