POLICE believe a man who died after crashing his car into a lamppost may have had a heart attack at the wheel, it emerged yesterday.
Kenneth William Ainsley, 39, of Hambledon Avenue, in Chester-le-Street, was travelling south on the A167 north of the Pity Me roundabout, near Durham, when the accident happened, at about 10am on Friday.
His Ford Orion left the road and collided with the lamppost. Mr Ainsley was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham, where he was certified dead.
A police spokesman said: "Investigators are examining the possibility that the driver may have suffered a heart attack."
