WARDENS have imposed 24 fines in one day to people dropping litter in Darlington.
The fines were imposed on Saturday as part of Darlington Borough Council's continued anti-litter campaign, which is backed by The Northern Echo.
Five of the council's uniformed wardens took to the streets to catch shoppers and traders who dropped litter in the streets or let their dogs foul pavements.
Each £50 fine must be paid within 14 days or could result in court proceedings.
Since the campaign was launched in November, more than 50 fines and 100 litter cautions have been issued. A litter hotline has also been launched to enable residents to tell the council about any litter or fly-tipping hotspots. They will be cleaned and then patrolled by wardens to ensure they remain tidy.
The hotline number is (01325) 388777.
