A CENTRE to help people who are blind or partially sighted has been opened.
Middlesbrough Mayor Ray Mallon and the town's MP Stuart Bell attended the launch of Action for Blind People at its new premises, in Borough Road.
The service has been set up for people with vision problems, providing them with information on treatment, benefits, job opportunities, leisure and housing issues.
Mr Bell said: "This is an important addition to helping those in our community who need assistance.
"Support is the most important as only six per cent of blind and partially-sighted people receive all the benefits to which they are entitled.
"We need to build on the work being done by Action for Blind People so that those who are in need not only get the fullest support but are able themselves to play a fulfilling role in their communities."
Middlesbrough Action for Blind People information and support services manager Joan Baty said: "For many people just talking to us and putting their diagnosis in context is invaluable, but we can give practical advice and support to their families too."
