MOTORBIKE enthusiasts have been urged by police to join a group where they can learn advanced skills before the riding season gets under way.
Many keen bikers who are now getting back into the saddle following the winter lay-off are being encouraged to take steps to improve their safety.
During 2001 to 2002 in the Northumbria Police area, there were 311 crashes involving motorcycles and mopeds in which people were injured, including 11 fatalities.
Inspector Kevin Wellden helped set up Northumbria Advanced Motorcyclists, which gives people the chance to improve their riding ability and enjoy arranged trips with other riders.
The group meets on the second Tuesday of each month and has more than 100 members.
About 30 of them trained as observers, qualifying them to offer guidance to other riders.
For details, contact Insp Wellden on 0781 845 0326 or 0776 624 3626.
